Google began piloting a global program Tuesday to compensate publishers whose content contributes to artificial intelligence-generated answers in its Gemini chatbot, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
The initiative, confirmed by Google to Digiday, aims to directly reward high-quality content that shapes AI responses during their generation phase, moving beyond traditional traffic-based monetization models.
Participating publishers manage their involvement through Google Search Console, where they can view monthly earnings and historical payment data, according to the company.
Google stated the payments are specifically for content that influences the initial AI response generation, not for subsequent fact-checking or linking, Digiday reported.
Publishers retain the option to opt out of the program at any time via their Search Console settings.
Initial feedback from some publishers involved in the pilot indicates current earnings are minimal when compared to existing advertising revenue streams. Luke Stillman, managing partner at Madison and Wall, characterized the payment calculation as a ‘black box,’ Digiday reported.
This new program differs from Google’s previous content licensing efforts, which typically involved negotiated deals with specific news organizations. The current pilot extends compensation opportunities to a broader array of websites.
The technology giant has been exploring various methods to integrate publisher content into its generative AI products while addressing concerns about intellectual property and fair compensation.
Industry observers are closely watching the pilot program’s development, anticipating its potential impact on publisher-platform relationships and the future of content monetization in the age of AI.
