OpenAI will begin testing a new visual ad format within ChatGPT‘s image generation feature with a select group of U.S. advertisers later this month, expanding its advertising capabilities and measurement tools.
This initiative marks a significant step toward monetizing OpenAI‘s artificial intelligence platform by introducing diverse ad solutions beyond traditional chat interfaces, aiming to reach ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users.
The new visual ad format will display images intended to inspire product usage or experiences, appearing distinctly separate from the generated image and clearly labeled as advertisements, OpenAI stated.
The company also is expanding its measurement partnerships through new integrations with several platforms, including Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, and Northbeam.
To provide advertisers with greater control over ad placements, OpenAI is introducing new brand suitability tools. These include Negative Phrases and pilot programs with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
Early results from partners have shown positive outcomes, according to OpenAI. WeightWatchers reportedly experienced a lower cost per acquisition (CPA), while Dose saw an incremental purchase lift, and Portland Leather attracted new visitors.
OpenAI described its work on incrementality measurement as being in its early stages. The company has not yet disclosed specific details regarding targeting, pricing models, or creative requirements for the new visual ad format.
The expansion into visual advertising aims to leverage ChatGPT’s growing user base and reach users across more experiences within the platform.
