Google Analytics introduced an ‘AI Assistant’ default channel group Tuesday to automatically track web traffic from recognized artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, the company announced.
This update for Google Analytics 4 (GA4) aims to simplify data analysis for businesses by eliminating the need for manual configuration to monitor user interactions driven by generative AI platforms.
Under the new system, sessions from identified AI assistants will be automatically assigned ‘ai-assistant’ as their medium value in GA4 reports. Traffic will then be grouped under the ‘AI Assistant’ channel within Default Channel Group reports, according to Google.
The campaign dimension for such traffic will also receive an ‘(ai-assistant)’ label, further segmenting this data for analysis.
Previously, GA4 property owners were required to create custom channel groups using complex regular expression patterns to isolate and analyze visits from AI chatbots.
Google stated that the automated tracking seeks to help businesses better understand the impact of generative AI by monitoring user clicks, identifying trending AI sources and comparing this new traffic against traditional website channels.
The new channel specifically captures AI assistant traffic that arrives with a referrer header. Google noted that any traffic from AI assistants that does not include a referrer header will continue to be categorized under the ‘Direct’ channel.
Other recognized AI platforms whose traffic will be automatically tracked include Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
