Global AI platforms, including ChatGPT, are withholding organic attribution data while offering extensive paid attribution, mirroring Google‘s 2011 decision and forcing a re-evaluation of SEO measurement strategies.
This practice reflects Google’s move over a decade ago to encrypt organic search referrals, making keyword data unavailable to search engine optimizers (SEOs) while paid advertisers retained conversion metrics.
The shift occurs as the deterministic attribution model, which tracks conversions from impression to sale, was already declining. Third-party cookie deprecation, Apple‘s App Tracking Transparency framework, and Google Analytics’ move to modeled conversions had already weakened traditional measurement, according to industry observers.
AI platforms are providing extensive attribution data for paying advertisers, including server-to-server conversions, pixels, and events APIs, a source familiar with the matter said.
However, these platforms offer only basic ‘on/off’ controls for organic visibility to webmasters, significantly limiting insights into non-paid traffic.
Duane Forrester, an industry expert, said commercially driven AI companies such as OpenAI and Perplexity have no incentive to provide free, item-level organic attribution data.
Even mission-driven AI companies like Anthropic lack a structural reason to develop an ads attribution layer, suggesting that organic attribution is unlikely to be provided by any platform, Forrester added.
Currently, referral traffic from AI answers remains minimal, typically accounting for less than 1 percent of total website traffic. This low volume makes traditional analytics insufficient for accurately measuring the impact of AI on organic visibility.
The industry is now facing a renewed challenge in understanding the value of organic search in an AI-dominated environment, pushing many toward paid advertising for measurable results.
