Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mode displayed text advertisements on 29 percent of commercial keywords, operating independently of organic search rankings or source citations, a new analysis by SE Ranking reported.
The study found that ads appeared on 29 percent of commercial keywords, establishing AI Mode as a distinct paid advertising channel separate from traditional search engine results.
For most keywords featuring ads, the advertiser’s domain was not among the sources cited by AI Mode, appearing in only 11 percent of instances, according to SE Ranking‘s findings. This suggested a weak correlation between ad presence and the information AI Mode referenced.
Ad frequency showed a stronger correlation with Cost Per Click (CPC) than with other factors. As ad frequency increased, the associated CPC also tended to rise, SE Ranking reported.
The presence of ads varied significantly across different commercial niches. The Pets category recorded the highest ad frequency at 72 percent, while Healthcare showed the lowest at 2 percent.
Advertisers seldom held organic rankings for the keywords they paid for. Paid URLs ranked organically for only 2 percent of keywords, and at the domain level, organic presence was observed in 15.35 percent of cases, the analysis indicated.
Google is currently experimenting with new AI Mode ad formats, including Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, which are embedded directly within the AI responses, according to SE Ranking.
Vidhya Srinivasan, a Google executive, previously stated that the company is committed to evolving its AI search experience, which includes integrating new ways for advertisers to reach users.
SE Ranking concluded that AI Mode ads should be considered a separate paid channel due to the lack of alignment with organic rankings and the sources cited by the AI.
