Google Search Console struggles with AI Overview metrics

Google Search Console’s current reporting methods fail to accurately reflect AI-generated search results and user behavior, leading to misleading search engine optimization (SEO) metrics, industry experts said.

The platform’s approach to AI Overviews, which treats entire AI-generated summaries as single blocks, renders traditional ranking metrics unhelpful for understanding performance in the changing search environment.

John Mueller, a Google Search Advocate, confirmed that Search Console assigns position one to the entire AI overview box and consequently to all links contained within it. This ‘block flattening’ approach occurs regardless of a link’s actual visibility or placement within the overview.

Search Console’s average position metric further complicates analysis by blending diverse search outcomes, such as those influenced by device, location and result type, into a single number that often does not align with real user experiences, Search Engine Journal reported.

Standard impression rules also skew data, counting a result as an impression upon page load. This credits unread links within AI Overviews, while links hidden behind ‘Show More’ toggles are only counted when a user interacts with them.

Research indicates that AI Overviews significantly reduce click-through rates to standard organic results, with one study by Seer Interactive reporting a 38 percent drop. The same research noted a 61 percent decrease in click-through rates to cited websites within AI Overviews, as users often find answers directly in the summary.

The shift necessitates that SEO professionals rethink traditional metrics and increasingly focus on outcomes rather than solely on position, as Google’s reporting tools adapt to the rise of AI in search.
