Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke criticized the proliferation of unreviewed AI-generated content, terming it ‘slop grenades’ and signaling a shift from underproduction to an overabundance of unchecked work and the emergence of a market for AI content correction.
Lütke, a prominent advocate for AI adoption, highlighted the hidden costs associated with this misuse, noting that contemporary laziness often manifests as excessive, unvetted output rather than a lack of productivity.
The chief executive illustrated ‘slop grenades’ with examples such as unreviewed AI-generated code changes and lengthy emails that subsequently require AI summarization, emphasizing that humans remain responsible for the quality of their work.
Shopify has mandated AI use across its operations since April 2025, according to company statements. AI integration is now a factor in performance reviews and recruitment processes.
The e-commerce giant also expects universal adoption of AI-assisted code editors by October 2025.
The demand for correcting AI-generated content is rapidly increasing on freelancing platforms globally. Freelancer.com reported an 87 percent rise in relevant advertisements, while Upwork saw a 70 percent jump in missions related to AI content correction.
Fiverr experienced a 20-fold increase in searches for ‘AI cleanup’ services, indicating a significant and growing need for human intervention to refine AI output.
A September 2025 survey by BetterUp and the Stanford Social Media Lab found that approximately 40 percent of U.S. office workers received ‘workslop,’ a term for AI-generated work that appears polished but is ultimately unproductive.
Each instance of ‘workslop’ required nearly two hours to process and correct, according to the joint survey.
Lütke’s remarks underscore a growing concern among technology leaders about the uncritical deployment of AI tools and the potential for a decline in overall work quality if human oversight is neglected.
