Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company needs its Gemini 4 model and advanced coding capabilities to remain competitive in artificial intelligence during Alphabet’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call.
The statement comes as Google faces delays with its Gemini 3.5 Pro model and recent departures of key AI researchers, highlighting ongoing challenges in the rapidly developing AI sector.
Gemini 3.5 Pro, which Google announced in May, remains in testing with partners due to persistent coding performance issues, according to company statements.
Google recently launched Gemini 3.6 Flash, an update to its Flash tier, which offers improved coding abilities and efficiency, the company reported.
Two senior AI researchers, Noam Shazeer and John Jumper, departed Google in June, moving to OpenAI and Anthropic respectively, Bloomberg reported.
Their departures were reportedly driven by concerns regarding Google’s strategic position in AI coding tools, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Pichai stated that Google needs its next generation AI model, Gemini 4, to stay at the forefront of AI development, particularly in agentic coding.
Gemini 4 is currently undergoing pretraining, a process Google has described as its most ambitious yet, though no release date has been confirmed.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, continues to invest heavily in AI research and development through its Google and DeepMind divisions.
Industry analysts have noted the increasing pressure on major tech companies to deliver advanced AI models capable of complex tasks, including sophisticated coding.
The competitive environment in AI continues to intensify, with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic actively recruiting top talent and releasing new models.
Google’s commitment to enhancing its coding capabilities through models like Gemini 4 is important for its long-term strategy in AI, Search Engine Journal reported.
