SEO professionals are developing new content strategies to address the evolving AI-driven search environment, focusing on aligning content generation with specific business objectives and conducting thorough content gap analyses.
The shift comes as AI Overviews and other generative AI features, such as those from Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, increasingly influence search engine results pages (SERPs), demanding that AI-generated content be high-quality and strategically relevant to avoid wasted effort.
Defining clear business objectives represents the initial phase in constructing an effective SEO content strategy, according to industry guidance. This step requires identifying how content will contribute directly to measurable outcomes, such as lead generation or revenue growth.
The subsequent phase involves building a comprehensive keyword universe and performing a content gap analysis, utilizing specialized tools like Ahrefs. This analysis emphasizes identifying ‘search competitors’ — entities vying for visibility in search results — rather than traditional business rivals.
Selecting competitors for this analysis should prioritize those actively competing for search visibility, which may not always align with direct product or service competitors, experts said. This distinction is important for uncovering relevant content opportunities.
Raw output from content gap analysis necessitates human evaluation to filter out keywords that are branded, off-intent, or otherwise irrelevant. The goal is to identify optimal opportunities for content creation rather than immediately targeting broad, highly competitive terms.
The third important step involves directly examining the SERP for target keywords, rather than relying solely on keyword data. The presence of AI Overviews and other advanced features can significantly diminish the value of a top organic search position, requiring a nuanced understanding of user intent and search result presentation.
