Google updated its guidance for AI-generated content on October 1, requiring manual fact-checking for all AI content, including metadata, before publication.
The policy change emphasizes the necessity of human oversight for information generated by artificial intelligence, aiming to maintain trustworthiness across its platforms.
This update follows observations that links from Google‘s Gemini AI now incorporate UTM parameters, which allow websites to track traffic sources more effectively. Google has not officially documented this change, according to industry observer Roger Montti.
In related news, Google’s AI Mode information monitoring feature is expanding globally to all users. This feature focuses on providing localized information and shopping assistance, Google said.
Meanwhile, a report from Advanced Web Ranking for the second quarter of 2026 indicated shifts in click-through rates (CTR). Desktop CTR decreased, while mobile CTR increased for top organic search positions, reversing trends seen in the first quarter.
Separately, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta dismissed antitrust lawsuits filed by Penske Media and Chegg against Google. The lawsuits concerned Google’s AI Overviews feature.
Judge Mehta ruled that Penske Media and Chegg failed to plausibly allege an agreement among competitors or establish legal standing for their claims, according to court documents.
Google has consistently stated that its AI initiatives aim to enhance user experience and provide more relevant information. Google analyst John Mueller has previously discussed the company’s approach to AI-generated content.
Google product manager Robby Stein also highlighted the company’s efforts in developing AI features that are both innovative and responsible.
