AMSTERDAM — Yoast SEO introduced a new feature called ‘Abilities‘ on Monday, allowing artificial intelligence tools to directly read and modify technical SEO settings on WordPress websites globally.
This development enables AI to implement changes such as canonical tags, robots flags, and schema types, which previously required manual intervention by site administrators or developers after AI tools identified issues.
The ‘Abilities’ feature integrates with the existing WordPress Abilities API and utilizes the WordPress MCP Adapter, ensuring compatibility with MCP-aware clients including Claude Desktop and VS Code, according to a statement from Yoast.
AI tools can now access a comprehensive set of SEO fields for any given post, including the post’s title, meta description, robots flags, schema type, canonical URL, social media previews, and SEO scores.
Yoast stated that modifications made through this API can be reversed, provided the AI tool maintains the original values within its operational context, supporting error correction and control over automated changes.
The new system also facilitates bulk and batch operations, allowing AI tools to apply ‘get,’ ‘update,’ or ‘filter’ requests across multiple posts simultaneously, streamlining large-scale SEO adjustments.
However, the focus keyphrase for content remains read-only, ensuring that critical elements related to content briefs and marketing workflows continue to require manual oversight and control, Yoast confirmed.
Access control for the ‘Abilities’ feature adheres to native WordPress capability checks, and no separate permission system is necessary, simplifying integration for existing WordPress users, Yoast indicated.
To begin using the feature, users must connect their large language model (LLM) subscription to Yoast; basic functionalities, including read access, core SEO field updates, and bulk operations, are included with the standard Yoast SEO plugin.
Yoast also reorganized its dashboard, grouping integrations by topic, and added a new ‘AI & agentic’ category to accommodate these emerging tools and workflows.
