Google and OpenAI introduced new artificial intelligence tools that extend user requests beyond initial interactions, transforming one-time queries into continuous monitoring and task management.
These advancements signify a shift from discrete searches to persistent AI agents capable of providing ongoing updates and managing assigned responsibilities across various applications.
Google made its AI Mode’s information monitoring capabilities available to all users globally on Sept. 28, following an initial rollout to Ultra and Pro subscribers, according to Liz Reid, Google’s head of search.
The company’s AI Mode agents continuously scan the web for information relevant to a user’s initial search query, delivering updates and suggesting tasks without requiring repeated input.
OpenAI launched its new always-on ChatGPT agents, dubbed ‘dots’, on Sept. 29. The agents are designed to manage assigned tasks across connected applications and a cloud computer.
These ‘dots’ can take on ongoing responsibilities, operate between conversations, and perform proactive research by reading permitted connected sources and saving private notes, OpenAI stated.
Both Google’s continuous monitoring and OpenAI’s ‘dots’ represent a move toward ‘standing instructions’ that remain active, providing continuous updates or task management, Roger Montti of Search Engine Journal reported.
Robby Stein, a product lead at Google, indicated that the AI Mode is intended to anticipate user needs and proactively deliver relevant information as it becomes available.
The introduction of these tools suggests a future where AI systems will maintain an active understanding of user interests and tasks, evolving the interaction model from reactive to continuously proactive.
