Google updated its guidance for site owners on October 1, warning that fabricating creator profiles, including using AI-generated headshots or false credentials, constitutes deception and signals low-quality content.
The update to Google‘s ‘people-first content’ guidelines underscores the importance of legitimate authorship, classifying the use of made-up names or credentials as a practice that makes a page untrustworthy to both users and Google’s automated quality systems.
This new directive aligns with existing instructions in Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which previously advised human raters to assign the ‘Lowest’ rating to pages employing deceptive practices.
The specific warning is located within the ‘Who (created the content)’ section of the guidance, immediately following advice encouraging site owners to provide accurate authorship information.
Roger Montti, a search engine analyst, noted that this update reinforces Google’s long-standing emphasis on trustworthiness and transparency in content creation.
While Google’s Search Liaison stated in January 2024 that bylines do not directly contribute to a page’s search ranking, the company’s latest guidance highlights that the authenticity of those bylines is important for overall content quality assessment.
The search giant has been increasingly focused on content quality, particularly in light of the proliferation of AI-generated content, and this update appears to be a step toward combating deceptive practices that might arise from such technologies.
Companies like Shutterstock offer AI image generation tools, which could potentially be misused to create fabricated author profiles, underscoring the relevance of Google’s explicit warning.
Google’s systems are designed to identify signals of low-quality pages, and the use of fabricated creator profiles is now clearly identified as one such signal that can negatively impact a page’s perceived trustworthiness and quality.
