Public relations strategies, rather than traditional search engine optimization tactics, are increasingly driving artificial intelligence citations from major platforms like Wikipedia, podcasts and Reddit, industry experts said Tuesday in Boston.

This shift highlights a reversal of a two-decade gap, positioning PR professionals with long-standing expertise in these content areas as essential for AI search visibility, according to analysis by The Mather Group and Leverage with Media PR.

Wikipedia stands as the most-cited domain in ChatGPT and a top source for Claude and Google AI Mode, primarily explaining processes, technologies and methods, rather than specific brands, according to data presented at the PRSA Northeast District Conference.

Podcast transcripts, YouTube videos and backlinks from interviews are becoming permanent training data for artificial intelligence, a content repurposing workflow long utilized by PR agencies.

Reddit maintains high visibility in Google Search, ranking fourth in the U.S., and serves as a significant source for Google AI Overviews, with 5.8 million citations, according to Muck Rack and Ahrefs data cited by Josh Greene, CEO of The Mather Group.

Greene stated that Reddit reaches 59 percent of U.S. business decision-makers, making it an important platform for information dissemination.

Lauren Cobello, founder of Leverage with Media PR, emphasized the importance of PR professionals’ skills in creating neutral, verifiable content for Wikipedia.

Cobello also highlighted the value of repurposing podcast content and engaging on platforms like Reddit, noting these skills are now essential for gaining visibility within AI-driven search results.

The Mather Group reported that SEO professionals are now playing catch-up to PR strategies for achieving visibility in AI search, a contrast to previous industry dynamics.

Research from Profound, Contently, SISTRIX, Comscore and SurveyMonkey supports the growing influence of these platforms on AI’s training data and citation patterns.
