Global public relations teams are largely failing to capitalize on significant, measurable SEO opportunities presented by the rise of AI search engines, according to recent industry analyses.

This oversight represents a critical gap for a profession historically challenged to demonstrate direct links between its efforts and business outcomes, as AI tools now provide unprecedented citation data.

Research by BrightEdge‘s AI Catalyst team indicated a consistent brand overlap, ranging from 35 percent to 55 percent, in results surfaced by various AI engines including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.

These AI platforms frequently cite review sites, comparison content, trade press, retailer listings and financial data, suggesting that strategic investments in public relations and review visibility directly translate into broader AI visibility.

Zen Media argued that the measurable citation data from AI tools marks a breakthrough for PR, enabling teams to quantify their impact more effectively.

Stacker research further demonstrated that earned media distribution can increase AI citations by a median lift of 239 percent.

Brands with established review profiles on platforms like Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra were three times more likely to be cited by ChatGPT, Stacker reported.

Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse platform found that earned media accounts for 25 percent of all AI citations, underscoring the importance of traditional PR materials such as press coverage and authoritative reviews.

Jim Yu, CEO of BrightEdge, emphasized the need for a unified strategy, stating that PR and SEO professionals must collaborate to build for three source layers: authoritative, commercial/editorial and user-generated content.

Yu highlighted the citation graph as shared territory, demanding integrated efforts from both disciplines.

Early adopters in establishing AI citation authority are expected to gain a compounding advantage, as entity authority is slow to build and decay, according to industry experts.

Katie Delahaye Paine, CEO of Paine Publishing, and Lily Ray, Senior Director of SEO at Amsive, also pointed to the transformative potential of AI for PR measurement.

Organizations like Wikipedia, Reddit, YouTube, Forbes, Gartner, Wirecutter and TechCrunch are among the diverse sources frequently referenced by AI search engines, alongside commercial sites.

This digital environment demands that public relations teams integrate more deeply with SEO strategies to leverage AI for measurable brand visibility and business growth.
