Google’s John Mueller said search engine optimization (SEO) ranking recovery, particularly following algorithmic updates or disavow file submissions, typically requires months, not weeks, to manifest effects.
Mueller, a senior webmaster trends analyst at Google, addressed a Redditor‘s experience of a simultaneous Google Business Profile suspension and a collapse in organic rankings after disavowing more than 800 problematic links.
He indicated that disavowing a small number of links is unlikely to cause a website to disappear from search results, advising users to investigate other potential causes for sudden drops.
The Google official explained that resolving issues stemming from algorithmic changes, such as those related to a broad spam update, can require many months before any improvements become visible.
Mueller further clarified that the effects of a link disavow typically take between three and six months to appear.
He suggested that a rapid ranking decline within days or weeks of submitting a disavow file is generally unrelated to the disavow action itself.
The Redditor involved in the discussion admitted to purchasing guest posts through the platform Fiverr, a practice Mueller implied could signal wider SEO problems.
This activity, according to Mueller, likely made the site susceptible to the impacts of Google’s recent spam update.
The guidance underscores that SEO is a long-term strategy, with major changes requiring substantial time for Google’s systems to process and reflect new site evaluations.
