Google search advocate John Mueller cautioned against using cache busting URL parameters on sitemaps, stating that the technique harms search engine optimization and tracking.

The advice addresses a tactic observed among some SEO professionals who append unique parameters, such as timestamps, to sitemap URLs to compel search engines to recrawl content daily, according to industry discussions.

Mueller emphasized that employing cache busting on sitemaps is ill-advised because it signals to search engines that the canonical URL for the content is constantly changing, which can confuse crawlers and negatively affect indexing.

Instead of relying on such parameters, search engines typically use the <lastmod> XML element within sitemaps to determine the last modification date of a file, prompting re-crawls when changes are indicated.

Clean and stable URLs are fundamental for effective search engine crawling and accurate tracking, Mueller told industry participants.

While cache busting has legitimate applications, particularly for ensuring website visitors download the most current versions of CSS, JavaScript, and other static files, Google stated it is not appropriate for sitemaps.

The technique, intended to bypass browser or server caching, can inadvertently suggest instability in content location when applied to sitemaps, according to Google’s guidance.

The advice from Google aims to clarify best practices for sitemap management and discourage methods that could inadvertently hinder a website’s visibility in search results.
