Global digital advertisers are re-evaluating how they measure the effectiveness of pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns as artificial intelligence increasingly reshapes online search experiences, making direct click attribution more difficult.
The rise of AI-powered search introduces new research and discovery phases before a user visits a website, challenging conventional click-based attribution models and demanding a broader approach to assessing campaign value.
Impressions and impression share are emerging as important directional signals for influence, even when a direct click cannot be immediately attributed to an ad, according to industry analysts.
Microsoft Advertising highlighted that impression-based remarketing (IBR) enables advertisers to target specific audiences or adjust bids based solely on whether a user viewed an ad, irrespective of an immediate click.
Correlating impression volume with other key business metrics, such as direct website traffic, branded search queries, social media listening data, and downstream conversions, can help advertisers gauge broader demand generation.
Accurate conversion tracking, encompassing both click-based and other forms of engagement, remains essential for demonstrating the tangible value of PPC efforts and for optimizing automated bidding strategies, experts noted.
Businesses are advised to maintain their own independent ‘source of truth,’ such as customer relationship management (CRM) systems, e-commerce platforms, or sales records, to validate conversion data reported by advertising platforms.
This internal validation ensures a more reliable assessment of return on investment in an environment where AI-driven interactions can obscure traditional measurement paths.
