MOUNTAIN VIEW — Google confirmed Tuesday it disregards llms.txt files and other AI-specific content formats for its generative AI features in Search, redirecting webmasters to traditional SEO fundamentals.

The technology giant explicitly stated that generative AI features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, do not utilize llms.txt, other text files, markups, or Markdown formats, rendering them ineffective for influencing AI outputs.

Creating or maintaining an llms.txt file neither benefits nor harms a website’s search engine optimization, as Google’s search engine simply ignores it, the company said.

This clarification aligns with independent tests conducted by SEO expert Daniel Roch and addresses structural criticisms previously raised about the llms.txt format.

Google advised content creators and web administrators to prioritize fundamental SEO practices, including a clear technical structure, high-quality content, and a positive page experience, rather than experimenting with unproven AI-specific strategies.

The company indicated that practices like content chunking, rewriting content specifically for AI, or artificially inserting brand mentions are unnecessary for its AI systems.

Focusing on core web best practices remains the most effective approach for visibility across both traditional search results and emerging generative AI features, according to Google.
