Google officials John Mueller and Martin Splitt warned against using stripped-down markdown for artificial intelligence (AI) search engine optimization (SEO) efforts, emphasizing that traditional HTML elements remain crucial for content ranking and discovery.
The search engine giant’s webmaster trends analysts argued that approaches prioritizing markdown over HTML for large language models (LLMs) overlook fundamental aspects of how search engines process and understand web content.
Mueller and Splitt, speaking on the “Search Off the Record” podcast, explained that search engine crawlers can easily convert HTML into plain text, rendering markdown’s supposed simplification for LLMs largely redundant.
They stated that the non-content portions of HTML, such as structural tags and metadata, provide valuable signals to search engines that markdown typically omits.
The Google officials underscored that markdown significantly hinders content discovery by stripping away vital elements like links, navigation menus, and header tags.
These elements, they said, offer essential context about a website’s internal structure and its connections to other online resources.
Without such context, search engines may struggle to fully comprehend the relationships between different pieces of content on a site, according to the analysts.
Furthermore, Mueller and Splitt suggested that search engines would likely not consider markdown content as canonical if the original, richer HTML version is readily available and extractable.
They stressed that the removal of this significant context, which is vital for understanding content and its relationships across a site, ultimately disadvantages content creators attempting to optimize for search.
The guidance from Google aims to clarify the company’s official stance on emerging AI SEO practices and highlight the inherent limitations of relying solely on markdown for content intended for search engine visibility.
