Google launched its AI Overviews feature in France on July 22, 2026, prompting immediate analysis of its impact on search engine optimization and website traffic.

The introduction has led to a measurable reduction in organic clicks for certain queries, necessitating strategic adjustments for businesses and digital marketers in the French market.

A recent webinar, attended by 242 live participants and drawing more than 600 registrants, discussed the initial effects, according to organizers Abondance and Getfluence. Experts from Abondance, Getfluence, and Datashake presented findings on the feature’s early performance.

Approximately 33 percent of analyzed search queries now display an AI Overview, resulting in a 15 to 30 percent decrease in clicks on those affected queries, according to data presented by Datashake. This impact primarily affects top-of-funnel informational pages.

Websites holding the first position in traditional search results have a 60 percent higher chance of being cited within an AI Overview, Victor Lerat of Datashake reported. Positions two and three have a 41.5 percent chance of citation, while positions four through 10 see a 19 percent chance.

Julien Bismuth of Getfluence noted that 66 percent of AI Overviews are triggered by evaluation queries such as “how,” “why,” or “what to choose.” In contrast, only 3 percent of AI Overviews appear for action-oriented queries.

Thomas Casiez of Abondance emphasized the importance of adapting content strategies to increase visibility within these new AI-generated summaries. He suggested focusing on clear, concise answers to common informational and evaluative questions.

An ongoing survey conducted by Abondance and Getfluence, titled “SEO & GEO,” aims to gather further expert insights on AI visibility within the French digital environment.

The shift represents a significant change in how search results are presented, requiring companies to re-evaluate their SEO tactics to maintain or improve their online presence in France.
