Google Gemini Adds UTM Parameters for Enhanced Referral Tracking

Google’s Gemini AI platform began incorporating UTM parameters into outgoing links Tuesday, significantly enhancing referral attribution for website owners and search engine optimization professionals globally.

This change addresses a long-standing challenge where traffic from AI chatbots often appeared as ‘direct’ in analytics platforms like Google Analytics 4 (GA4) due to missing referrer or UTM data, making it difficult to accurately track and attribute AI-generated visits.

The quiet implementation of UTM parameters was confirmed through recent discussions on Reddit, where users noted the change as a recent development.

While a referrer technically existed, it frequently failed to transmit correctly, particularly within mobile applications such as the Gemini mobile app or Android assistant, leading to traffic being miscategorized, users reported.

UTM parameters are designed to persist through in-app webviews and are recorded in raw server logs, offering a more reliable method for attribution compared to referrer data alone, according to industry experts.

Improved referral attribution from Gemini enables SEO professionals to better segment traffic, compare performance across various channels, and more effectively justify resource allocation to AI-driven initiatives, said Mueller, a recognized figure in the SEO community.

Google has not yet publicly documented the specific conditions under which Gemini triggers the addition of these UTM parameters.

This contrasts with other AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, which reportedly adds UTMs only for answers grounded in web searches, according to reporting by CrawlWarden.

The addition of these tracking parameters is expected to provide greater clarity for businesses and content creators seeking to understand the impact of AI platforms on their web traffic and user engagement.
