TORONTO — Websites frequently encounter a ‘crawled – currently not indexed’ status in Google Search Console because their content lacks sufficient unique value for inclusion in the search engine’s index, according to expert analysis.
This status indicates that Google has downloaded a web page but determined it is not useful enough to be displayed in search results, a common issue primarily stemming from content quality rather than technical errors.
Marie Haynes, an SEO expert, highlighted that while technical problems like misconfigured robots.txt files can occasionally prevent Google from fully rendering pages by blocking CSS or JavaScript, such instances are rare. She emphasized that content quality is the predominant factor.
Google’s advanced artificial intelligence has significantly lowered the barrier for content creation, making it more challenging for generic information to stand out. Pages that merely rehash existing information without offering unique personal experience or knowledge are frequently classified as ‘commodity content’ and consequently not indexed, Haynes reported.
The search giant reportedly experiments by temporarily indexing some pages to evaluate user satisfaction before making a permanent decision on their inclusion in the index. This process helps Google gauge the real-world utility of content.
Furthermore, pages that are not canonical versions of content, such as /feed/ pages, pagination, or URLs with specific parameters, are typically found in the ‘crawled – currently not indexed’ list. Google Search Central documentation indicates that these are often intentionally excluded from the main index to prevent duplicate content issues.
To resolve this status, website owners should focus on creating content that provides unique insights, first-hand experience, or specialized knowledge that cannot be easily found elsewhere, according to Google’s guidelines on content quality.
