Website security measures designed to block malicious traffic can inadvertently cause legitimate pages to be removed from Google‘s search index, Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller said April 30, 2026.
These security checks, often displaying an “are you a bot” interstitial page, can be indexed by Google instead of the site’s actual content. This can lead the search engine to classify the real content as a duplicate or remove it from its index entirely.
Mueller explained that Google may encounter numerous similar bot verification pages across different websites. When this occurs, Google typically selects one of these interstitial pages as the canonical version and marks others as duplicates, potentially even choosing a page from an unrelated website.
The issue is particularly challenging for website owners to detect because regular human visitors may not see the security screen. The problem often originates from third-party services such as content delivery networks (CDNs), web hosts, or dedicated bot-protection layers.
Website administrators can identify if their pages are being affected by using Google Search Console’s page indexing report. This tool can reveal if specific pages are flagged as duplicates or if Google has canonicalized them to a different URL.
The URL Inspection tool within Search Console also provides insights into how Google views a specific page, helping to diagnose whether a bot verification screen is being indexed instead of the intended content.
To resolve the problem, website owners should contact their security service provider, CDN, or web hosting company to adjust the bot protection settings. Following the necessary changes, owners can use Google Search Console’s “Validate Fix” feature or await Google’s subsequent crawl to re-index the correct content.
