Google’s Mueller clarifies ‘Validate Fix’ function in Search Console

Google’s John Mueller clarified the optimal use of the ‘Validate Fix’ button in Search Console on Tuesday, explaining its function in resolving website indexing issues.

The feature is designed to accelerate the recrawling of affected URLs after a reported indexing problem has been rectified, rather than initiating a full site recrawl, Mueller said.

When a webmaster clicks ‘Validate Fix’, Google examines a sample of the previously affected URLs. If the underlying issue persists within this sample, the validation process ceases.

Conversely, if the sample indicates the problem has been resolved, Google then queues the remaining known-affected URLs for a faster recrawl, Mueller explained.

Mueller emphasized that using the ‘Validate Fix’ button is not compulsory, as Google will eventually detect fixes during its routine crawl cycles.

The function is most effective when a widespread issue, such as server or content delivery network (CDN) errors causing numerous pages to drop from the index, has been resolved.

In such cases, prompting Google to recheck those pages sooner can be beneficial, he said.

The button operates under the assumption that all instances of a particular indexing issue have been addressed across the site, not just on a single page.

For rectifying problems on an individual URL, Mueller advised that the URL Inspection tool, coupled with a specific re-index request, is a more appropriate method.

For large websites, filtering reports to include only a sitemap of important pages can help expedite the validation process, according to Google.

Most flags within page indexing reports are expected to clear automatically as Google recrawls and updates its counts over time.
