OpenAI announced it will discontinue its Atlas AI browser less than a year after its launch, integrating its functionalities into a new comprehensive desktop platform called ChatGPT Work, effective August 9, 2026.
The move marks a strategic pivot for the artificial intelligence company, which faced security vulnerabilities with Atlas shortly after its debut in October 2025.
ChatGPT Work will absorb Atlas’ AI-assisted browsing features and combine them with existing ChatGPT and Codex capabilities into a unified desktop environment. OpenAI stated the new platform aims to serve as an operating system for office tasks.
The standalone Atlas browser encountered security issues, including prompt injection attacks and a flaw that exposed browsing history through malformed URLs, according to reports at the time.
Powered by the new GPT-5.6 model, ChatGPT Work integrates with a range of widely used business tools, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and SharePoint. It also supports email, calendars, customer relationship management (CRM) systems and project management applications.
OpenAI said the new platform is designed to handle web navigation, document generation and multi-hour project management, positioning it as a central hub for professional productivity.
The Codex product, previously a standalone offering for developers, will lose its dedicated application status. Its features will be integrated into ChatGPT Work, alongside new enhancements tailored for developers.
ChatGPT Work is currently available to users on all desktop subscription plans. OpenAI plans to roll out web and mobile versions for its Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu offerings in the near future.
