Alphabet Inc. reported record second-quarter 2026 revenue of $119.8 billion, a 24 percent increase year-over-year, but posted a negative free cash flow of $5.855 billion due to significant artificial intelligence infrastructure investments.
The negative free cash flow resulted from $44.924 billion in capital expenditures, which substantially exceeded the company’s operating cash flow for the quarter, according to the earnings report released Thursday.
Capital expenditures were primarily driven by spending on AI infrastructure, with 60 percent allocated to servers and 40 percent to data centers, the company stated.
Alphabet anticipates its total capital expenditures for 2026 to reach an estimated $180 billion to $190 billion, which would be six times larger than its 2022 spending.
To help finance these extensive AI-related investments, Alphabet successfully raised $49.6 billion through an equity offering during the second quarter of 2026.
The Search & Other segment remained Alphabet’s largest revenue source, generating $63.3 billion for the quarter.
Google Cloud emerged as the company’s fastest-growing segment, reporting $24.8 billion in revenue, marking a 23.8 percent increase from the first quarter of 2026.
Anat Ashkanazi, a financial analyst, noted that the scale of Alphabet’s AI investment reflects a strategic bet on future growth, despite the immediate impact on cash flow.
The company’s substantial spending underscores the intense competition among technology giants to develop and deploy advanced AI capabilities.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has been aggressively expanding its AI research and development efforts across its various products and services.
The BBC previously reported on the increasing capital outlays by major tech firms as they race to dominate the artificial intelligence sector.
The company confirmed its commitment to long-term AI leadership, indicating that current investment levels are necessary to maintain its competitive edge.
