The rise of AI assistants and conversational queries has rendered traditional search volume metrics ineffective for content strategy, requiring businesses to adapt their digital outreach.
Content strategists must move beyond simple keyword demand, as AI-driven tools like Google‘s AI Overviews and OpenAI‘s ChatGPT process user prompts differently than conventional search engines.
AI assistants employ a “query fan-out” technique, breaking down a single user prompt into multiple sub-queries across various data sources, industry observations showed.
This method contrasts with traditional keyword tools, which report demand only for typed strings and often miss the longer, more conversational, and context-rich prompts common with AI assistants.
Prompts frequently describe complex situations, include specific constraints, and imply decisions, making them more valuable to businesses than basic search queries, experts said.
For effective content strategy in the AI era, prioritizing sub-questions, entities, concepts, and implied decisions over broad head terms and simple definitions is important.
While AI is transforming search, search volume remains relevant for short, transactional queries, including brand searches, product searches, local intent, and “near me” searches, a Shopify report indicated.
Valuable raw material for identifying new content opportunities can be found in platforms such as Google’s “People Also Ask” section, Reddit, Quora, and various industry forums.
Insights from sales calls and support tickets offer direct understanding of customer needs and potential content gaps that AI assistants might address.
