An analysis of 846,000 Google Search sessions in the U.S. revealed that AI Overviews are significantly altering user behavior, leading to longer engagement on Google’s search results pages and more deliberate clicking decisions.
The findings indicate a fundamental shift in how users interact with search results, extending the time spent on Google and transforming previously reliable organic traffic patterns for various search types.
AI Overviews consistently keep users on Google’s search results page for a notably longer duration across all search categories, including informational, local, navigational, transactional and video searches, according to the analysis.
Historically, user engagement varied sharply depending on the search type. However, with the integration of AI Overviews, all search types now exhibit similar, prolonged engagement patterns.
Navigational searches, which traditionally led to quick site visits, now show a substantial increase in the time users spend on Google before clicking. Active engagement for these searches, measured at 21 seconds, rose from 12 percent to 46 percent when an AI Overview was present.
Cursor tracking data further suggested that users engage with a wider area of the search page when an AI Overview is displayed. This behavior was observed even for highly directed navigational searches, where users typically have a clear destination in mind.
Users also kept their cursor still more often, at 44 percent compared to 29 percent, when an AI Overview was present. Simultaneously, they covered more of the screen with cursor movement, indicating a more careful evaluation of the search results.
The study highlights how Google’s AI Overviews are fundamentally changing user interaction with search results, impacting how brands and content creators might previously have anticipated user journeys and organic traffic.
