Google’s John Mueller offered advice on optimizing Google Search Console alerts and implementing XML sitemap strategies for search engine optimization recently.

Mueller emphasized that GSC email alerts serve as a tool for identifying significant technical problems, such as widespread 404 errors, robots.txt blocks preventing crawling, and the unintended application of noindex tags.

For smaller websites built on platforms like Wix or Squarespace, or those using well-configured content management systems, indexing errors are frequently temporary, according to Mueller. He indicated that email alerts are generally sufficient for these sites unless a substantial drop in traffic occurs.

Conversely, large websites necessitate proactive and continuous monitoring of technical aspects. Mueller stated that these sites should prioritize issues that impact numerous pages simultaneously, including slow crawl response times, DNS errors, major crawl errors, and sudden spikes in 404 errors.

The importance of Google Search Console alerts varies considerably depending on the specific platform type, the total number of pages on a site, and the nature of its content, Mueller explained.

Regarding XML sitemaps, Mueller outlined several strategic reasons for splitting them into multiple files. These include the ability to track distinct groups of URLs more effectively and to manage content freshness, differentiating between evergreen and dynamic content.

He also noted that splitting sitemaps helps anticipate Google’s 50,000 URL limit per sitemap file and facilitates the management of hreflang attributes for multilingual sites. Furthermore, splitting can support system automation processes for sitemap generation and submission.

Mueller, a Search Advocate at Google, regularly shares insights on SEO best practices and how webmasters can leverage Google’s tools effectively.
