Global search engine optimization firm Yoast outlined significant shifts in Google‘s content and search algorithms after its September 2026 core update, emphasizing artificial intelligence’s growing influence on digital visibility.
The update highlighted Google’s efforts to combat low-quality content and adapt to new user behaviors driven by large language models, presenting challenges and opportunities for brands and publishers.
Google intensified its crackdown on low-value programmatic SEO content, now labeling it as harmful and likely to negatively impact search rankings after the recent core update, according to Yoast’s recap.
To combat unhelpful, automatically generated material, Google launched SAFE, a new AI spam detector designed to filter such content and promote high-quality search results.
OpenAI began rolling out advertisements within ChatGPT globally, a development that could affect organic visibility for brands while simultaneously creating new avenues for advertising.
Google reported that ChatGPT is driving new and often highly specific long-tail search queries, indicating increased opportunities for niche content to achieve higher rankings.
Carolyn Shelby, an SEO expert, noted that citations from platforms like Reddit within ChatGPT pose brand risks because large language models often rely on frequently repeated information, underscoring the need for consistent messaging and active engagement.
Addressing monetization concerns, Google is piloting a program to compensate publishers for content utilized in AI-generated answers, as AI responses become a standard feature in search.
Cloudflare introduced a feature allowing websites to block AI crawlers, such as those from OpenAI, without impeding Googlebot. However, blocking these AI agents may reduce content visibility within AI-generated answers, according to Yoast.
Google is also blocking various scrapers and tracking tools, which is making traditional SEO data less dependable and requiring content creators to diversify their data sources.
Mark Williams Cook, an industry analyst, said that Google Lighthouse now includes an audit for AI Agent Resource Discovery (ARD), which provides AI agents with information about a site’s capabilities.
Alex Moss, a content strategist, stated that the evolving environment necessitates a strategic re-evaluation of content creation and distribution to maintain relevance in AI-driven search environments.
The State of Brand, an industry report, previously indicated that brands must prioritize unique, authoritative content to stand out amid the proliferation of AI-generated text.
