Websites are shifting from direct customer destinations to authoritative data sources for artificial intelligence systems, compelling businesses globally to adapt their digital strategies, according to a new report.

This evolution means AI assistants can identify businesses, assess customer needs and book services without direct website visits, making the provision of accurate information for AI paramount.

Sachin Puri, CEO of Newfold Digital, stated that websites remain the definitive source of business information, even if the customer journey originates and concludes elsewhere.

Bluehost, a web hosting company, analyzed 83.4 million daily verified AI crawler requests across its hosted sites, company data showed.

The analysis found that 90 percent of these requests were for model training, 9 percent for search indexing and 1 percent for live assistant fetching.

Puri emphasized that businesses must differentiate between machine consumption and human referral traffic, tracking both metrics without confusing crawler activity with direct conversions.

A proposed measurement framework for businesses includes Visibility, which assesses if the business appears in AI search results; Accuracy, which verifies the correctness of its information; and Action, which determines if AI exposure leads to a referral or purchase.

Effective AI optimization aligns closely with established web engineering principles, Puri noted. This includes maintaining a clean site structure, ensuring accessible content, providing accurate information, ensuring consistent business details across platforms and utilizing schema markup.

Websites must offer specific, factual details, such as services offered, operating hours and licensing information, rather than relying solely on keywords. This enables AI systems to precisely match businesses with customer requests.

Companies like Google, Yelp, ChatGPT, OpenAI and Reddit are among those utilizing AI to process and present information, further underscoring the need for businesses to optimize their online presence for machine readability.
