Google, Shopify, Cloudflare, and OpenAI are integrating WebMCP, a new standard designed to connect artificial intelligence agents directly with website actions, global technology leaders announced this month.
This technology allows AI agents to discover and utilize named tools registered by websites, facilitating structured data exchange and enabling automated interactions within a user’s live browsing session.
Google issued guidance in May for developers, outlining methods to optimize websites for human users and AI agents, specifically highlighting the utility of WebMCP, according to Ilya Grigorik.
Shopify announced in August that WebMCP tools are now active across all Liquid storefronts, its proprietary template language. The e-commerce giant provides 10 distinct WebMCP tools, including a proceed_to_checkout function.
Cloudflare introduced a developer preview, allowing websites to enable a WebMCP bridge directly from their dashboard. This feature injects a script at the network edge without requiring modifications to the original website code.
OpenAI enhanced its ChatGPT platform on Aug. 25 by adding Site tools to its built-in desktop browser. This integration enables ChatGPT Work and Codex to leverage page-provided tools for various functions.
The core appeal of WebMCP lies in its operation within the user’s active session, which also presents unique security considerations for developers and platforms.
Companies like Netlify, Vercel, and Render are also expected to explore or implement similar WebMCP integrations as the standard gains wider adoption across the web.
