Google Search Analyst John Mueller said traditional position metrics are no longer relevant for tracking impressions from generative artificial intelligence results, reflecting an evolution in Search Engine Results Pages.

Mueller acknowledged on Reddit that existing Google help documentation on this topic is complex and difficult to interpret.

For generative AI features, Google tracks positions as a comprehensive block rather than individual line items, and does not provide separate detailed reports in the Gen-AI performance section, he said.

Mueller stated that a simple solution to provide useful position data for site owners remains elusive, and he expressed openness to suggestions from the SEO community.

This change presents challenges for SEO professionals who traditionally rely on precise ranking data to evaluate content performance and optimize strategies.
