Google on Wednesday withdrew an artificial intelligence image generation feature from its Google Earth platform after users exploited it to create and share inappropriate disaster imagery.

The feature, initially designed to visualize conceptual improvements like gardens on vacant lots, was rolled back on July 31 following widespread misuse that included generating images of exploding bombs and urban catastrophes.

Google cited violations of its content policies and the need for stronger protective measures as reasons for the immediate removal.

The company stated that all generated images were watermarked and were not visible to other users within the primary Google Earth experience.

Despite the company’s assurances, the incident prompted significant criticism across social media platforms, including X, formerly known as Twitter.

Critics questioned the foresight of Google engineers, suggesting a disconnect between development and potential real-world misuse.

The rapid withdrawal highlights the ongoing challenges technology companies face in deploying AI tools responsibly and preventing their exploitation for harmful content.

Google has been an active developer in AI technologies, with applications ranging from search enhancements to creative tools.

The company has previously emphasized its commitment to ethical AI development, often collaborating with partners like Shutterstock to integrate AI capabilities.

However, this incident highlights the difficulties in predicting and mitigating all potential abuses of generative AI features, even when designed for benign purposes.

The Silicon Valley tech giant did not immediately provide a timeline for when or if the feature might return, or what specific guardrails it plans to implement.
