Google’s recently introduced Search Console features for Generative AI data are providing misleading metrics to marketers, potentially obscuring actual website performance and economic value, a recent analysis showed.
The new reporting, rolled out in early June, includes impression counts for AI Overview answer boxes and AI Mode panels, yet these metrics often lack corresponding click data or detailed query information, diminishing their practical business utility.
Google’s own documentation confirms a “single position rule” for AI search elements, where all URLs appearing within an AI Overview block are assigned position one, a practice that distorts actual organic search rankings, Search Engine Journal reported.
This methodology means Google Search Console’s “average position” metric now combines standard organic search ranks with AI Overview appearances. This blending can create confusion and potentially mask genuine declines in traditional search rankings and subsequent traffic, the publication noted.
For businesses, impressions from AI summaries frequently lack direct economic value, as they do not consistently translate into website visits or conversions, according to industry observers.
SEO teams are advised to adjust their measurement models, prioritizing tangible organic revenue and lead generation over the inflated impression numbers reported by Search Console.
Experts also recommend increased reliance on first-party analytics tools to gain a more accurate understanding of user behavior and website performance, bypassing the potentially deceptive data from Google.
Shutterstock, among other organizations, has reportedly begun adapting its strategies to account for these changes in how Google presents search performance data.
