Google executive Nick Fox stated Thursday that artificial intelligence features in Search send billions of clicks to websites weekly, without providing detailed supporting data.
The announcement by Fox, senior vice president of Knowledge and Information at Google, comes as the company continues to assert that its overall Search platform directs billions of clicks to the internet daily, a figure also lacking public methodology.
Neither the weekly AI-specific click figure nor the daily aggregate Search figure includes a baseline, a denominator, or a transparent methodology, according to Google. The company has not published the underlying data for either claim.
Liz Reid, Google’s vice president and head of Search, previously cited the daily Search click figure in an August 2025 blog post. Reid noted that organic click volume remained stable but did not offer exact numbers or specific data points.
Google is introducing generative AI performance reports within Search Console for a select group of website owners. These reports show impression data but do not include specific click data, according to the company.
The absence of detailed data prevents individual website owners from independently auditing Google’s aggregate figures or fully understanding the specific impact of AI features on their own traffic, digital marketing experts indicated.
Industry observers, including SEJ, have noted that without verifiable data, website owners cannot fully assess the claims regarding AI-driven traffic or its implications for content strategy and search engine optimization.
