Google officials said recently that overall site quality, not solely technical issues, significantly influences how its systems index web pages, urging site owners to assess content from a user perspective.

The search giant’s stance suggests that while technical optimization remains important, a website’s perceived value and relevance can directly influence whether its pages are indexed and appear in search results.

Martin Splitt and John Mueller of Google discussed the relationship between site quality and page indexing, noting that not all non-indexed pages stem from technical problems.

Mueller indicated that Google’s systems would reduce indexing efforts if they harbored “strong concerns” about a site’s overall quality.

If Google’s algorithms are “seriously worried” about content quality, they will crawl and index significantly fewer pages, according to Mueller. This often results in pages being categorized in the Page Indexing Report as “crawled not indexed” or “discovered not indexed.”

Many site owners frequently attribute a lack of indexing to technical faults, often overlooking underlying quality issues within their content or the site itself, Google representatives said.

Mueller advised website owners to adopt the viewpoint of an uninvolved visitor when reviewing their own sites. This approach, he suggested, can help identify areas for quality improvements that might otherwise be missed.

The Page Indexing Report, available through Google Search Console, provides tools for identifying indexing problems and understanding the various stages of indexing, including pages that have been discovered, crawled, or not indexed.

Content generated by artificial intelligence, if it lacks uniqueness or genuine value, can contribute to a perception of low quality by visitors. This could potentially negatively impact a site’s indexing performance, Google noted.
