Google updated its Search Console to allow brands to monitor social media and video post performance in search results, a move some analysts suggest is a strategic effort to conceal traffic declines caused by generative artificial intelligence.
The global update, widely perceived as a beneficial feature for marketers, is instead being interpreted by some as a calculated maneuver to redirect focus from organic website traffic losses stemming from AI summaries and experiences that retain users within Google‘s ecosystem.
Industry observers argue that Google is attempting to redefine marketing success by shifting the primary metric from direct website organic traffic to social media impressions visible within Search Console.
This update encourages content creators to verify their social media accounts within Search Console, which in turn provides Google with verified entity relationships. These relationships are critical for training its AI models and large language models, according to reports.
Verified social profiles function as a “human trust filter” for Google, assisting the company in distinguishing authentic brands and authoritative content from the proliferation of AI-generated spam, one analysis indicated.
Google integrates social media content into its search results through various mechanisms, including live data feeds, traditional web crawling, and JavaScript rendering, ensuring a comprehensive view of online activity.
Platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) are among those whose content can now be tracked by brands through the updated Search Console.
The analysis warned that brands relying solely on Google’s new metrics risk ceding audience control to the technology giant. It advised brands to prioritize building direct connections with their audience on their own platforms to maintain autonomy.
