MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — A new Google report released Tuesday indicates a significant divergence between topics Americans discuss with artificial intelligence and how they spend their daily time, particularly for complex or “high-friction” subjects.
The AI & Economy ATLAS report, based on 14.65 million interactions across Google’s Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, and the Gemini API, compared non-work related AI conversations with data from the American Time Use Survey.
The study found that government services and civic obligations represented the widest gap, with AI conversations about these topics occurring nearly 20 times more frequently than the actual time Americans spent on them, Google reported.
Professional and personal care services, education, and consumer purchases also showed substantially higher rates of AI conversation compared to the time dedicated to those activities.
Conversely, daily activities such as eating and drinking, travel, sports, caring for household members, watching TV or movies, washing and dressing, cleaning, and cooking were discussed far less in AI interactions than the time Americans allocated to them.
Google stated that questions related to medical, legal, financial, and government services, often considered high-friction topics, were frequently posed to AI outside of traditional working hours.
The report highlights a trend where AI tools are utilized more for complex or potentially stressful life events rather than for mundane daily routines, according to Google DeepMind researchers.
