Advertisers are increasingly using paid search email placements within email environments, powered by platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads, to drive additional traffic and engagement.

These ad units, integrated into search engine advertising ecosystems, function as a distinct channel offering performance metrics that bridge direct response and brand awareness, according to industry experts.

Originally focused on audience and behavior-based targeting, these placements now incorporate more search term-style targeting, particularly with the expansion of Google’s Performance Max search themes and keyword content targeting, said Brandon LaRocco, an executive at Amsive.

The effectiveness of paid search email placements varies significantly, depending on factors such as the brand, campaign setup, target audience, industry vertical and key performance indicators (KPIs), LaRocco noted.

Remarketing efforts and campaigns leveraging customer lists generally outperform prospecting audiences, he added.

Patrick Dunfey, also of Amsive, emphasized that performance should be measured against comparable metrics like conversion rates (CVR), cost per lead (CPL), or cost per acquisition (CPA) from display and social media placements, rather than solely against search conversion rates or impressions.

Email placements are considered incremental, generating additional traffic and demonstrating high click-through rates and extended time on site, according to Amsive.

Google’s Demand Generation and Performance Max, alongside Microsoft‘s Bing Audience Ads and Performance Max, facilitate these placements by integrating ad units directly into email platforms.

Despite search engine recommendations to consolidate placements, experts suggest separating video and display components into unique campaigns or ad groups for enhanced control and to mitigate potential cannibalization of other advertising efforts.
