Global organizations are employing flawed methods to measure their visibility within artificial intelligence search environments, leading to inaccurate assessments of business impact, industry experts said.
Current strategies, predominantly reliant on “prompt tracking,” often fail to distinguish between a model citing a source and actively recommending a brand, which can inflate perceived reach without generating actual user engagement.
Prompt tracking measures how frequently an AI model mentions or cites a brand in response to a typed prompt, according to Jono Alderson, a consultant and former special adviser to the World Wide Web Consortium. However, these invented prompts frequently do not align with genuine user queries, rendering the data unreliable.
AI systems, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, routinely access Google to ground their responses, which can result in inflated impression data within Google Search Console without corresponding human clicks, said Jason Packer, founder of Quantable.
A significant distinction exists between an AI model citing a brand as a source and recommending that brand to a user, according to Lily Ray, senior director of SEO at Amsive Digital. Research by Visibility Labs indicated that brands cited in AI Overviews are often not explicitly recommended.
Product recommendations from AI models can change substantially when search capabilities are enabled, further weakening the correlation between citation and recommendation, according to Jeff Oxford, founder of Visibility Labs. This suggests that a citation does not automatically translate into a user preference.
The correlation between being cited by an AI and being recommended is weak, and these citations often do not transfer across different search engines or AI platforms, Kevin Indig, an independent SEO consultant, reported. This highlights the limited scope of current measurement techniques.
Alisa Scharf, an SEO consultant, emphasized that businesses need to develop more sophisticated measurement strategies that account for actual user behavior and the specific intent behind AI responses rather than relying on superficial metrics.
Industry experts recommend focusing on metrics that reflect genuine user interaction and conversion rather than solely on the frequency of brand mentions within AI-generated content to accurately gauge business value from AI search visibility.
