Google is integrating artificial intelligence agents into its Search product, requiring a unified optimization strategy for both traditional search and AI, company executives said Tuesday.
The move signals a shift in how content creators should approach discoverability, with Google emphasizing that the core principles for ranking well remain consistent across both human-driven and AI-driven queries.
Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive officer, stated that many information-seeking queries within Google Search would become “agentic,” meaning they will involve AI completing tasks and running multiple threads.
Nick Fox, senior vice president overseeing Search, Ads, and Commerce, confirmed that optimizing for AI search is the same as optimizing for traditional search: creating high-quality content.
Examples of this integration include Google’s AI Mode in Chrome’s address bar and background search agents, which perform tasks such as filling forms and completing bookings, according to Google.
Pichai acknowledged that the AI Overview product is still evolving and has “scope for improvement,” while reaffirming Google’s commitment to sending traffic to the broader web.
Content that performs well in AI search needs to go “beyond the surface level,” offering original data, first-person experience, or specific insights that AI cannot generate on its own, Google advised.
Websites should be built with server-rendered HTML, semantic markup, structured data, fast delivery, and strong internal linking to be optimized for both human users and AI agents, according to recommendations from Google.
Industry experts, including Jono Alderson, have discussed the implications of this shift for search engine optimization professionals on platforms such as r/TechSEO.
Ben Smith of Semafor reported on the company’s evolving strategy, highlighting the importance of foundational web development practices.
