AI search is fundamentally reshaping search engine optimization (SEO) into an engineering challenge, necessitating new strategies for citation acquisition and continuous optimization, according to a recent study by Writesonic.
The AI content platform reported a significant increase in leads from AI search, rising from 2.5 percent last year to 35 percent as of March, highlighting the growing influence of AI-driven results.
Writesonic CEO Samanyou Garg said 96 percent of AI search citations now point to third-party sources such as Reddit, YouTube and various forums, a notable increase from 80 percent just a few months prior. This shift indicates a move away from traditional website content.
Garg also noted that the lifespan of an AI citation is considerably shorter than typical content calendar assumptions due to frequent model updates, requiring more agile SEO approaches.
For effective AI visibility, Writesonic recommends a strategic focus on both on-page and off-page SEO, suggesting an initial 60 percent emphasis on off-page efforts.
The company outlined a framework for SEO agents comprising four layers: identity, knowledge, skills and tools. This approach aims to empower existing experts rather than replace them, according to a report by Search Engine Journal.
Writesonic advocates for a “closed-loop SEO” methodology, treating every published page as an experiment. This involves continuously measuring indexing, ranking and citations to inform iterative improvements.
To prioritize work, Writesonic scores pages using a business impact potential formula that incorporates four weighted factors.
Automation in this new SEO paradigm should focus on connecting disparate data sources and establishing proactive detection loops. However, human verification remains critical before implementing changes, Writesonic stated.
Industry expert April Dunford also contributed insights to the discussion on adapting to the evolving search environment.
