A global analysis of 107 million AI-generated answers revealed significant variations in citation sources across different industries and AI platforms, according to research firm Trendos.

The study, which examined responses from major AI engines including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, indicated that brands must tailor their content strategies to align with these industry-specific citation patterns.

Community and user-generated content, such as Reddit and YouTube, constituted approximately 50 percent of leading AI citations across all three industries analyzed by Trendos.

For the IT and solutions services sector, independent editorial and reference sources, including B2B review directories like G2, Clutch, and Gartner, accounted for 47 percent of citations. Brand-owned sources made up only 2 percent of citations in this industry.

Conversely, in the consumer goods industry, brand and retail sources were a dominant factor, making up 46 percent of all citations. This figure was significantly higher than in other sectors, Trendos reported.

The communication services industry showed a heavy reliance on community and user-generated content, which comprised 51 percent of its citations. Independent editorial and reference sources contributed 40 percent, with Reddit frequently appearing as a top source.

The findings suggest that a one-size-fits-all approach to AI visibility is ineffective for brands. Instead, companies should focus on optimizing their presence within the specific citation categories most relevant to their industry, a spokesperson for Trendos stated.

Major AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews were included in the extensive data analysis. Other frequently cited sources across the study included Quora, Amazon, GoodFirms, SourceForge, Slashdot, PCMag, TechRadar, and Wikipedia.

Trendos emphasized that understanding these distinct citation patterns is important for brands aiming to effectively reach their target audiences through AI-powered search and information retrieval.
