Advertisers globally must audit their Google Ads accounts to identify and correct “value inflation,” a pervasive issue causing significant wasted ad spend by misguiding Smart Bidding algorithms.
This phenomenon occurs when Google Ads’ automated bidding strategies, such as target CPA (tCPA) and target ROAS (tROAS), optimize toward inaccurate conversion data, treating inflated or phantom values as legitimate revenue, according to industry analysis.
Common causes of value inflation include double-counted micro-conversions, incorrect weighting of primary versus secondary goals, and the import of inflated offline conversion data, experts said.
Stale conversion value rules and drift in dynamic value feeds also contribute to the problem, leading Smart Bidding to aggressively pursue these artificially high numbers, which can increase cost-per-click (CPC) and deplete budgets without generating actual returns.
Google Ads systems are unable to discern the true conversion value from an inflated one, allowing reported account values to swell by 20 percent to 40 percent without triggering internal alarms, according to reports.
This lack of internal detection means advertisers must proactively implement an audit framework to address these discrepancies.
The audit process typically begins with a thorough review of conversion action weighting and an examination of attribution models to ensure accuracy.
Correcting these foundational elements prevents algorithms from optimizing for non-existent or exaggerated value, which directly impacts campaign performance and profitability.
While Google Ads and platforms like Microsoft Advertising offer sophisticated bidding tools, their effectiveness is contingent on the integrity of the data they receive.
Advertisers are advised to regularly scrutinize their conversion tracking setups to maintain data hygiene and ensure Smart Bidding operates on accurate, real-world revenue signals.
