AI-referred traffic to U.S. retailers converted 42 percent better than other digital channels in March 2026, marking a significant reversal from its performance one year prior, Adobe reported Monday.
The Adobe 2026 Q2 AI Traffic Report indicated a dramatic shift, with AI-driven traffic moving from being the worst-performing channel to the best within a 12-month period, altering digital marketing strategies for retailers.
Just 12 months ago, AI-referred traffic converted at approximately half the rate of other channels, according to the report.
AI-referred traffic experienced substantial growth, increasing 393 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026. This growth peaked in December, recording an 1,151 percent year-over-year increase.
Engagement metrics for AI-referred traffic also showed marked improvement compared to non-AI traffic in March 2026. Time spent on sites increased by 48 percent, pages per visit rose by 13 percent, and revenue per visit climbed 37 percent, Adobe said.
Overall engagement for AI-referred traffic was up 12 percent, the report stated.
The report highlighted the importance of “Citation Readability,” noting that top-performing retailers achieved significantly higher scores in AI parseability. This suggests that the clarity and structure of content for AI systems play an important role in conversion success.
Els Aerts, an expert cited by Digital Commerce 360, explained that the purchase funnel for AI-referred traffic is often shorter. This is because users have typically conducted extensive research using AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini before clicking through to a retailer’s website, she said.
Retailers such as Dell have begun to adapt their online presence to optimize for AI search, according to industry observers.
The findings suggest that businesses must now prioritize how their digital content is consumed and interpreted by artificial intelligence systems to capitalize on this growing and increasingly effective traffic source.
