The escalating use of artificial intelligence in search and recommendations is significantly increasing the urgency and complexity of removing negative content from Google search results and AI answers globally.
AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are projected to influence 45 percent of local business recommendations by 2026, a substantial increase from 6 percent just one year prior, according to research from BrightLocal. This surge means negative reviews and information are more frequently surfaced by AI Overviews and assistant answers, directly impacting reputations.
Requests to Erase.com specifically addressing negative AI Overview and assistant-answer content have risen 215 percent year over year, indicating the growing challenge for businesses and individuals.
Experts emphasize that true ‘removal,’ where the source page is eliminated, is the only method guaranteed to prevent content from feeding AI answers. Other outcomes, such as ‘deindexing’ (removing from Google search while the page still exists) or ‘suppression’ (pushing content down with new material), do not fully address the AI problem.
Addressing negative news articles often involves seeking factual corrections or requesting unpublishing, particularly for older pieces concerning non-public figures. Legal action for defamation remains an option for demonstrably false information.
Google generally does not deindex legitimate news articles upon request, making alternative strategies more effective for managing online reputation, according to Search Engine Journal.
Even after a page is successfully removed from its original source, Google may continue to display cached listings for several weeks. In such cases, utilizing Google’s Outdated Content Tool is necessary to expedite the removal of these cached versions from search results.
The increasing prominence of AI in information retrieval underscores a significant shift in online reputation management, making proactive content removal strategies more important than ever.
