WordPress officially released its canonical Model Context Protocol (MCP) Adapter plugin, enabling artificial intelligence functionality for websites while maintaining backward compatibility with existing MCP versions.
The plugin integrates AI capabilities directly into the WordPress ecosystem, allowing AI systems to connect with applications, data, plugins, tools, and websites.
MCP, an open standard developed by AI research company Anthropic, facilitates AI access to information and the ability to perform actions within various digital environments.
Jason Adams, director of engineering for AI at Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, confirmed the plugin’s release.
Adams highlighted the plugin’s architectural design, which prioritizes backward compatibility and leverages the Abilities API to ensure seamless integration.
Prior to its official inclusion in the WordPress.org repository, the MCP Adapter plugin was available on GitHub, where it had accumulated more than 40,000 installations, according to project data.
Version 0.70 is the first iteration of the plugin to be published in the official WordPress.org repository, marking its formal endorsement and wider availability to the platform’s user base.
The move by WordPress, which powers more than 43 percent of all websites on the internet, signals a broader industry trend toward embedding AI directly into content management systems.
This integration aims to streamline how AI interacts with web content and user applications, potentially enhancing site functionality and user experience.
The plugin’s design to maintain backward compatibility is intended to ensure that websites utilizing older MCP versions can still benefit from the new AI functionalities without requiring extensive overhauls.
