WordPress’s global market share has declined from its peak, prompting industry discussions about the future of content management systems as static site generators like Astro experience significant growth.
The shift indicates a potential change in web development, moving away from traditional CMS platforms towards more streamlined solutions, technology analysts said.
WordPress’s market share, which peaked at 43.6 percent in mid-2025, has since dropped to 42.2 percent, a 1.4 percent decrease, W3Techs reported. This decline suggests a broader trend impacting the dominant web platform.
A significant portion of WordPress’s reported market share may be inflated by abandoned or spam websites, with 10.56 percent of WordPress sites not updated since 2022, W3Techs data showed.
Conversely, Astro, a static site generator, has seen a 100 percent year-over-year increase in downloads, reaching 2.5 million per week, up from 1.4 million in 2025.
Joost de Valk, founder of Yoast SEO, suggested that users primarily seek a functional website rather than a complex content management system, a sentiment that aligns with Astro’s simpler approach.
Rayhan Arif expressed skepticism regarding the organic nature of this shift, hinting at a potential coordinated campaign against WordPress, possibly orchestrated by Cloudflare, which acquired Astro.
However, others like Tommy J. Vedvik and David V. Kimball countered that Astro’s momentum predated Cloudflare’s acquisition and any potential marketing campaigns.
Many individuals defecting from WordPress to Astro are long-time WordPress professionals, indicating a significant transition among experienced users in the web development community.
The movement of these professionals suggests a deeper dissatisfaction with existing CMS solutions and a preference for newer, more efficient technologies.
The evolving situation presents challenges for established platforms like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, as newer tools like Astro, EmDash, Sanity, and 11ty gain prominence.
